I went to Sydney after work and came back to Canberra the next morning just to watch Regina Spektor. And what can I say? It was well and truly worth it. She was very versatile and naturally talented. I love her quirkiness and spontaneity. And it was great how the songs vary in style and technique. I'm sure everyone in the theatre had their eyes fixed on her, waiting for every little thing that she'll come up with and not wanting to miss any detail to her performance. I know I did. Unlike most singer/songwriters, I read in an interview that her songs aren't necessarily based on personal experiences but rather figments of her imagination. She's different that way and I love her for it. She weaves words and music together to tell stories that will make you laugh, cry, hope, fear, loathe and love at the same time. I just wish there was a bit more banter with the audience but I suppose we had to let her sing. She did play Hotel Song and Samson before finally saying goodbye so I really had no reason to complain. :)

I spent another weekend in Sydney where I watched the Live Earth concert with Len, Erwin and Giselle.

I would've wanted to see Blue King Brown and Sneaky Sound System but they were on too early and I decided at the last minute to take a later bus from Canberra. And just as well... I had to bring some work home and was testing an application till after midnight on Friday night. I needed those few extra hours the next morning to sleep in and recharge.

I eventually got to Central at around 1 and met up with Len to get some grub. We then found ourselves in the middle of the sales at Pitt Street and so you all know what happened next. FYI, I was a good girl. I didn't get a single thing (although it seemed like I wasn't about to let go of the Bayswater tote for a while). But Len had some good finds. She got a nice bra, this cute little bag from Mimco and the same pair of heels that I got from Nine West a week ago. Score! I played the role of the supportive friend, of course. :p

We got to Aussie Stadium just as Missy Higgins was finishing her set. I would've wanted to watch her a bit so I can call Doug. I didn't have other compelling reasons to see her play otherwise. On the other hand, I was really looking forward to John Butler Trio and Jack Johnson. I had seen JBT thrice this year and I still can't get enough of their music. I swear by how fantastic they are live and they're sitting next to DMB, Jason Mraz and Sting on top of my best concert experiences list. They're that good, I tell you. They played Zebra, Better Than, Good Excuse, Treat Yo Mama and Funky Tonight. The setlist was too short but it's ok... I'm meant to see them again in a little over a month. Jack Johnson was great as well. He was there with half of ALO (I was a bit cut that the half didn't include Steve Adams, hehe). They played Times Like These, some song that I don't know, Good People, Gone, Traffic in the Sky, Staple It Together, Fall Line, Mudfootball and Inaudible Melodies. Love love love!

Erwin and Giselle left after Jack Johnson's set cos they had to go to another friend's dinner. Len and I stayed on and watched a bit of Crowded House but we decided to leave early to avoid the crowd in Central. We got back to Quakers Hill at 10 and had Nasi Goreng for dinner.

Photos here.

I missed my train the next morning and Len had to drive all the way to Central to make sure that I make it to my bus on time. I arrived in Canberra just in time for the Asian Cup party at Csaba's where we had Hungarian Paprikas, Paella, Spanikopita, Serbian desserts and a Chilean version of Leche flan.

It was generally a good weekend... except the Socceroos better get their act together. Hay nako.

And yet more photos of Paolo Nutini. These ones are from his set at the Blues Festival in Byron Bay.

He's possibly my greatest musical discovery of 2006 and is one very talented kid. So yeah, do yourself a favour and get your hands on his music if you haven't already. :)

Yep, I saw them all there. :) There were so many other acts to see but I suppose one can only do so much. I did enjoy the gigs that I was able to watch though. I had been wanting to go to this festival for three years now and having waited this long, I'm quite happy that it didn't disappoint. I must admit that I was a tad disheartened when DMB, Rodrigo y Gabriela and Feist pulled out. Go Gol Bordello even cancelled at the last minute. But the gains outweighed the losses and a great time was had by all. I'm still on a bluesfest high and heaps of thoughts are buzzing through my head. There were far too many notable highlights - a long overdue catchup with Mich, an interesting encounter with some Brazilians, wading through mud at the festival grounds, Paolo Nutini remembering me, Jack Johnson's surprise gig, Ozomatli bringing the batucada to the crowd, the best breakfast after mass on Easter Sunday, John Butler's flawless performance, finding Langos where I least expected them to be, eating chips for the first time in almost 2 months, shower stalls in the hostel, socialising with other backpackers, constant rain in Byron Bay, etc. etc.

I think I'm going again next year. Keen?

There you were, right in front of me.
A brand new day, sunrise over sea...

I've always liked JBT but their concert last night exceeded my expectations. I was blown away by how awesome they were live. I can't wait to see them again in April!
